February 2006

My friend Ben always sends me bizarre ecards for my birthday. Here’s the latest one he managed to dig up (signed “your alien friend, Ben”).

Ecard from Ben

I’m 33 years old today. I did a Google search on the phrase “33 years old” and found a bunch of results, most of them not good. If anyone knows something interesting or special about being 33, please let me know.

Tonight I read Meet Diego! to Evan for his bedtime story. We noticed that there were an awful lot of excalmation marks, so after we finished reading, we went through the whole book and counted them. The final tally … 41!

Sunday it almost hit 60 degrees, and this morning when I walked out to my car I was surprised to see it snowing big puffy flakes. Half-way down the hill the snow turned to rain because of the lower elevation. Even weirder, this afternoon it was sunny, raining and snowing all at the same time. That was a first!

Today was the science fair at Evan’s school. His project was an experiment to see if a Hot Wheels car would go farther with more weight on it. Sheryl and I both had fun working on it and Evan did a great job. He wrote out the Hypothesis, Procedures, and Conclusion sections all by hand and came up with what to say by himself with a little parental consultation. His final board looked really great, too, thanks to Sheryl’s scrapbooking eye. I’ll try to post pictures once they get uploaded to the computer.

Now that the rain  has stopped it’s gotten very windy.  The power at my work has gone out over the weekend a few times in the last month.  This afternoon me and a co-worker were rushing to finish up installing some stuff on a laptop for the VP of Sales who is leaving for the UK tomorrow.  Half-way through the complicated setup, all the machines in our office hiccuped and then flicked off.  For about an hour all we could do was wander around aimlessly socializing.  There really isn’t much work you can get done in a software company with no power.  Luckily the power came back on and we just managed to finish our work by the end of the day.

Ughh, that was a bad game! Granted, I was pulling for the Seahawks, so I’m a bit biased, but still. Pittsburgh’s entire offense was basically three big plays, and everytime the Seahawks made a big play, it got called back for holding. Ugly, ugly, ugly. I turned off the TV in disgust after it ended, so I didn’t see who the MVP was, but frankly, nobody on Pittsburgh’s team deserved it (except maybe the ref on their payroll). Ugly, ugly, ugly.

Ever since Evan started Kindergarten, it seems, somebody in our family has been sick.  This past week Sheryl and I have been battling nasty coughs and Evan had a fever and missed two days of school.  Between being sick and the constant rain, it seems like we never get a chance to do stuff outside.  Today, though, Evan seems to be doing better and it’s a beautiful sunny day.  If the weather holds and we help Evan finish his science fair project soon enough, maybe today will be the day we break the trend.
